It has been a philosophy at Rocking R Red Angus to focus on the female cow when building the herd. Therefore, selection of females has been highly discriminatory. Also, every bull purchased to be a herd sire must excel on the maternal side of the equation. Fertility, Profitability, Docility, and Performance are all very important aspects of our Red Angus Females. Open cows are culled without question. We have one calving season and believe that a cow that can not do her job every year is a cow that does not belong in our program.
We AI a large majority of our registered Registered Red Angus females. We utilize a synchronization protocol during our AI season. Therefore, during breeding season, our cows are processed through our facility a minimum of 3 times in a short period. Docility and workability is important because we expect efficiency during our breeding season. Time is money and we believe that cows that make our jobs harder are a waste of time and resources. Cows with bad attitudes are not tolerated. |
We demand great feet due to the bluff country where our cattle spend the summers. Steep, rocky terrain is the norm during the summer months. Our cows need to raise a good calf and hold good condition while breeding back. We ride through our cattle multiple times a week on horseback. Cows that do not maintain condition or begin to deteriorate are noted and culled at weaning time.
At the end of the day, we feel that putting the female first allows us to raise great cattle who produce offspring that we are proud to pass along to our customers. |
